I got this for my Intex 15ft above ground pool and it has been a god send. First as a pool owner it is a hassle, cleaning, adding chemicals, testing the water, adding water and so on and so on. Owning a pool is a commitment but the rewards are great. I wanted to add a salt water system so I could eliminate adding chemicals and reduce the maintenance on the pool. Now I have to add NOTHING to the pool even on the sunniest day I have to add NOTHING (normal use cases). The water stays clear and zero signs of algae. Now I had a pool party and we had several people in and out of the pool for several days and the water was cloudy..In that case I could have pushed the BOOST button on the chlorinator but instead I opted to add a little shock and an hour later the water was back to its normal bright blue color.Installation was very easy. Just disconnected my current filter out hose connected the chlorinator to it and connected the chlornator out to the pool and that was it. Took all of 2 minutes. They even give you some extra pipe fittings incase you have custom pipes.5 Months after firs use: winterizing was easy. I reduced the pump and chlorinator run times and covered the pool after several weeks..water is beautiful...cold as hell but beautiful.

The lack of information that intex provides for salt chlorinator owners is reprehensible. They would have you believe that if you have this unit, there is no need to add chemicals to the pool. You just don't have to add chlorine, you do however have to add sanitizers, oxidizers, and balance your Ph along with the salt that is required for it's operation. In addition, the electrolytic cell has to be cleaned very gently to remove calcium scale buildup on it. To do this, you'll need either vinegar or muriatic acid, then you'll have to dissasemble the cell from the housing & soak it. Without the presence of other chemicals in the pool, the chlorine generated will not last long, causing most owners to increase it's runtime, which in effect shortens the life of the product. While cleaning the cell itself, you can damage the iridium coating on it, thus decreasing it's effectiveness. In 100+ degree weather where I am, the chlorinator doesn't do as effective of a job as you would be led to belive by the company, and consumers with a brief ownership of this product. I have had 4 chlorinators in 3 years, all of which I regret having continued the cycle. From a financial aspect, at a cost of $169 per year for chlorine, that would buy you two big buckets of tablets, which for me would be more than sufficient. Being that the generator has no way of preserving the chlorine, if you don't add stabilizers to the pool and something happens, say you disconnect it or it quits working for some reason or another for 1 overnight period, you can expect your pool to be a very rich green with lots of algae growth, unlike typical chlorine that would have this development over a few days. The chlorinator lacks the ability to oxidize the water, so many owners will deal with the cloudy water, when in truth if you would simply shock your pool periodically you wouldn't have to deal with this issue.Now, my overall review of chlorinators is very good. When used in larger in-ground pools, the technology can save you thousands of dollars over years of use, but for this above ground model I have found it to be less than economical, and more comparable to driving an SUV in this day & time.In regards to intex customer service, after my first unit broke they fixed it no problem without any question. it had gone out in less than 2 weeks. The next one lasted for 2 months, they refused to fix it. Silly me ended up buying another one, then I upgraded to the copper ionization which is a total waste of money and actually harmful if you run it all the time as it can promote bacteria growth if ion levels are too high. Effectively, a single bottle of algae control would have done the same thing throughout the swimming season.Good technology for in-ground, but a waste of money for above grounds. This particular unit wasn't designed to be durable, so it breaks. Far for me to believe that after reading so many reviews of people having this issue, they still recommend the product. My expereince with this product, and how long it took me to finally realize & get the information required to use it properly, compared to the proper way, just is not economical & once you have this information you'll think like-wise.

We have been trying to keep out pool chlorinated all summer. I finally gave up. Within a week here in central Florida, my pool was the color of a swamp, complete with things swimming in it! When I connected this and the Intex Sand Filter, my pool was clean and ready to swim in 2 days! Wish I had bought this last summer when we got the pool!
