By WhispersToPigs
Ok so I'm middle aged and I ran away screaming from Chemistry 101 years ago. But yet, being in Florida, I became possessed with the idea to get an AG (above ground) pool for the summer. Well I got one, an Intex 15 x 48 (review coming soon) I set it up, filled it up and then I went to the pool store, I went to WallyWorld (word to the wise DO NOT ASK A WALLY WORLD EMP. any pool questions, they know as much as I do!), I went to the OTHER pool store, then back to the first pool store. I had water tested, more water tested, I added bags of shock (which FYI you are not only not supposed to NOT breath,(hello-it's a powder!) NOT get on your skin, but they can EXPLODE!? (mind you this is setting it up, no one (me) had been in it and its not like I have 5 kids running around-I don't even own 1) a jug o' scale slime reducer and ph down and some kinda acid that sounds like Cyanide?!?! (that I had to put in a sock and tie to the ladder so it wouldn't harm the vinyl-and I'm going to put my SKIN in there)?? and even got one of those handy dandy nifty cool sharkey floating chlorinators and while putting the tablets in I tried to back away from the smell-which is almost impossible. For my multiple purchases and over [...] worth of chemicals I got a free 4 inch beach ball that I got to watch float around with the stinky sharky chlorinator in a pool that I couldn't use! WOOO HOOOO! Every time I was in the pool store I found myself backing away toward the door, hand over mouth, going,"how do you guys work in here, it STINKS!" but still somehow they'd get my money and Id get bag full of "THE RIGHT" chemicals. With all the guidance and chemistry I managed to change my water from clear, to milky white, milky brown, brownish brown and greenish brown. My hands, despite the gloves (that leaked) and gas mask, became dry, sore, raw and broke out in some weird red itchy painful bumps. Finally having enough I drained that sucker, figuring Id kill some major plant life. (My plants are now bigger than ever? Go figure? :-/ While draining it...it was lucky I didn't slip n fall as it was that kind slimy, in less than 2 weeks time and despite the chems.Still wanting a pool and after much reading...in desperation, I ordered this pump/generator and went without groceries for a week. OMG I could hug it and cry, I love it that much! You fill up your pool. You go to wallyworld and buy pool salt (and maybe some PH down)You put 100-150lb in your pool (about [...] per 40lbs at Wallyworld)You turn on the THE VERY VERY POWERFUL 2000gph FILTER pump for 24 hours (unlike the rinky dink junk that comes with the pools-520gph-mean you need to run it 10 hour a day at least for a 15 by 48 when NOT in USE!)The next day you turn on the generator. And you have a CHLORINATED, chemical free (except for the ph down) wonderful feeling, CLEAN, CLEAR pool! Now I've only had it running 2 weeks, and its still too cool to get in it, but the test strips test fine, tho my ph remains a little high and I'm using VERY HARD straight from the ground deep well water, and I could get in it any time if it was warmer. My hands aren't breaking out or cracking and there is NO chlorine odor. Its hard to explain but the water "feels different" in a good way!Now before I bought this I read a lot of whining about programming it, that kinda concerned me. I'm NOT techie! Now that I own it...its so easy its laughable. Beep, beep beep, beep beep, Beeeeep, beeeep and you are DONE and I'm serious as long as it took me to type that, thats how fast it programs. Takes me longer to et an alarm clock!! And you can run just the pump if you need to without the generator. I'm serious. So who cares if the power is interrupted or you want to run it at a different time. The first time I ran it (and the second) it started beebing insanely at me (beep beep beep beep beep) and flashing its little red light till it got my attention-its showed a 91 (low salt) off I went to get more salt and its been happy (93) ever since. Its pretty much idiot proof. Also it was VERY easy to hook up and is VERY quiet. My Only complaints/concerns thus far-The outside connections are a bit heavy on the side of the pool-make sure you have everything tight. And unlike just the Intex pump, that tells you to unplug it before you get in the pool, this one says to leave it plugged in. Just common sense and safety says to unplug it even with a GFC plug-its NOT hard to reprogram! For the 15 by 48 the manual tells you 100lbs of salt and 3 hours run time.Reality is its 140lbs of salt and 4 hours run time.I am FINALLY looking forward to being a pool owner and this summer! This generator saved my sanity, and I think it is SOOO much healthier than ALL THOSE CHEMICALS (just read the packages, they should scare the ....outta you-and then you are going to dip your body in them?? After it practically tells you to use gloves to the elbow and a gas mask and to utilize them. NO THANK YOU-BYE BYE pool store, BYE BYE evil chemicals, by bye cool sharky floater thingy. If anything changes, or my water color changes I will update, but for the time being...I LOVE THIS THING, well worth the money!!!UPDATE...It is now the end of May. I sold my cool sharkey floater LOL. I live in FL and it has BEEN HOT-all days 90-95 degrees! Now my pool is shaded for half of the day but in return I get leaves and oak pollen on the bottom which is next to impossible to get up. Still this pump is doing a FANTASTIC JOB! My water has been sparkly clear since I fired her up! Its now warm enough that Ive been swimming and the water is very gentle to your skin. I have very hard water and Ive had to ad NO OTHER CHEMICALS which for me is a JOY as I HATE chemicals. (I should prob ad some PH down but WHY, that stuff is an evil acid and my pool feels and looks great. The only thing I can say is that every time it rains I do get a low salt reading and do have to ad about 1/2 a bag of salt...and in FL where it rains every afternoon, well I guess Ill be going thru a lot of salt. ;) We did have one REALLY BAD rain event and I shut down the pump due to the lightening and forgot to re set it and the next day my pool was lightly milky. I almost paniced. Well I just added a bag of salt, chlorinated for 3 hours and then about 7 hours later I ran it for 4 hours and PROBLEM SOLVED. Clear beautiful water returned! The Intext test strips DO NOT WORK in checking your chlorine level...they give you a color that matches NOTHING on the bottle. When I took a pool water sample to the pool store they could register no chlorine????? (I did not tell them it was a salt water pool) and they handed me a list of about $100 worth of chemicals I needed to buy and I laughed and left empty handed. So if there is an issue its that I cannot check the Chlorine ppm on a intex test strip or at a pool store-would love suggestions on this as well as a NATURAL chemical free way to lower the PH. And I know something is working great as I live on a farm and every water trough-even those in the shade, bleached, scrubbed clean and refilled will turn nasty green in 24-48 hours. My Pool...CRYSTAL CLEAR! ANd now that Ive been in it, no slime!!! I STILL love this pump and HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT esp for pool newbies like me! So simple and results are fantastic! And for anyone who HATES chemicals as badly as I do and who has senstivie middle aged skin like I do, for any size pool this is the only way to go-a salt water system. I sound like a commercial but after doing it the old fashioned way the first time, I could not be more thrilled with this generator!PS I did get a low flow reading one day..another moment of panic...I just pulled out the filter, hosed it, drained the filter compartment (the turny knob on the bottom that looks just like the one on the top), and walah, all good as new again! If you hose your filter and not doing a heavy load in the pool you can get them to last about 3 weeks and I can tell you after shopping around AMAZON is the CHEAPEST place to buy your B filters for this pump-get them in the case of 6 and even with shipping you save BIG $$ compared to local stores.

By Contrary2
I admittedly was a little hesitant to order the saltwater generator/filter pump because I was worried that it would be difficult to figure out. Also, there were absolutely no ratings anywhere on this product which didn't help matters. I have been using it for 3 days so my review is only based on the little time I've had it so I don't know how the long term will be but so far so good. You can run the pump only if needed but once you set the generator for however many hours you need it to run (don't worry the table of how long depending on pool size is in the booklet) the pump will also turn on and shut off automatically and start again in 24 hours. It wasn't that difficult to set up and once on it seems to be doing a good job of keeping the chlorine levels perfect. Remember you still will need to buy other chemicals for ph balance and akalinity balance. The system comes with hoses and fittings for the intake and outlet for both large and small pools. They wouldn't work on my pool (Little Tikes zip tight) but the others (Aqua Leisure etc) should be no problem. After the system runs through a cycle it has a display that shows what action you may have to take by using numbers (91-low salt, 92-high salt and 93-system completed/no problems). So far it seems to be doing what it supposed to but if something comes up and I have trouble I'll be sure to update my review.

By S. Hamon
I bought this pump 6 months ago when the price was much higher than it currently is (as of Aug 09) and felt at that time I got a great deal. For the price it is going for now...it is a HUGE bargain considering the time you'll save and more importantly, the money saved for dangerous chemicals that you will NEVER have to use.INITIAL SETUPYes, it is HEAVY!! But that is a good thing. It is constructed of metal and heavy-plastic...appears it will last awhile. You can bolt it in place if you wish (some states require that you do), or you can simply place it on the ground next to the pool. When I first took it out of the box and saw all of the attachments I freaked out thinking it was going to be a nightmare to put together. It also has a mini-novel for a manual. But...after looking over each piece for a few minutes and just glancing through the manual, I figured it out and had no problem setting it up. They give you 4 hose attachment configurations (2 are for pools with smaller intake/outtake holes {1.25"}, and the other 2 are for pools with larger intake/outtake holes {1.5"})...knowing that, it isn't so scary looking at & trying to hook up. I have the 13x39 Summer Escapes Quickset pool (with the inflatable ring top), which holds somewhere between 2100-2200 gallons of water, and this pump could easily take care of a pool 5 times it's size. Only problem I had with initially setting it up...my pool isn't an Intex, so it didn't have exactly a 1.25" or 1.5" hose hole, so I carefully cut it and it works perfectly. I don't recommend doing this unless you are fairly confident in your ability to cut a perfect circle with a flat razor blade...otherwise it could leak. If you don't want to, you can google the correct attachment. I cut my hole to 1.5" so I could use the larger attachments since it has an adjustable direction outtake (aim it to the side to make the pool do a slow swirwl, which will result in better filtration).PROGRAMMINGProgramming is simple...hold down a button to enable programming mode, enter the hours you want it to run, then hold down a button again to confirm and you're good to go! One thing the manual doesn't tell you...the timer works on a 24-hour clock and will always turn on the chlorinator at the same time each day that you initially programmed it. Example....I want mine to run at night since you can't swim in it when it's chlorinating...so I enter programming mode at 11pm and set it for 4 hours...then every night at 11pm it will start the chlorinating process for 4 hours. Now, the problem with this systems programming. If the power goes out, you unplug it, turn it off, or anything like that...it loses it's chlorinating programming and you have to do it again. This can be kind of a pain, but as I stated earlier, for the price and how well it cleans (I'll get to that later in the review), I can deal with it. I have to reprogram mine about every 3 days because I use the pump to vaccuum the pool...to turn on just the pump without chlorinating, you have to turn the system off and back on again. Doing this loses the chlorinating programming, but enables just the pump (since this is the combo system, the pump and chlorinator are separate processes - but the pump runs when the chlorinator is running).PREPARATIONThe manual states to add the required amount of salt and let the pump run for approx 24 hours before turning on the chlorinator to be sure all salt has disolved. I let my kids get in and splash around to mix it up and was positive the salt disolved within an hour and had the chlorinator running within 3 hours of first putting in the salt and encountered no problems. My pool required approx 60 lbs of salt, which cost me less than $15 at my local Sams. $4 for a 25lb bag of table salt is a lot cheaper than a container of chlorine...and I haven't had to purchase anymore since then. Wally World had "pool salt" but is no different than table salt, so don't be fooled thinking you need to buy the more expensive stuff...just be sure it doesn't contain iodine.IT'S OPERATION, CLEANING ABILITY, ETC.....drum roll please...Outside of the pains with reprogramming, this pump is PERFECT for a smaller above-ground pool. 6 months later and my water is crystal clear. Last year I used powdered chlorine and had to empty my pool every 2 weeks to scrub the slime off of the walls...but this system has not allowed any slime to form. Now, to keep your water clean, you must keep the chlorine level at an appropriate level or you will get yucky water. This system is not God and cannot work miracles. You must do your part in making sure it chlorinates for the right amout of time. The more your pool is in the sunlight, the longer you will need to have the chlorinator running. My pool is in open sunlight from about 12pm until 6pm and I run it for 4 hours everynight. I think 3 1/2 hours would be more appropriate for my pool size, but you cannot do half-hour increments. I have not noticed an increase in my elec bill at all, but my water bill is surely a lot lower from last year because I am not emptying and refilling a 2100 gallon pool every 2 weeks. When it is running, it makes a fairly quiet hum...just enough for you to know it is on, but not enough to be annoying.MAINTENANCEThis pump/chlorinator combo does use a filter...filter type B from Intex. My local Wally World sells a package of 2 for about $17, which isn't bad since you don't have to purchase chlorine, stabilizer, ph balancer, shock, or anything else. To make the filters last longer, about once a week I take it out and give it a good spraydown with the hose on high. I change the filters about every 6 weeks. Other than that, there really is no maintenance. When I vaccuum, I have an attachment that collects larger debris before it goes into the pump so I don't have to worry about clogging. I do recommend this kind of vaccuum because it can clog with larger debris like tree bark, large leaves, pine needles (I live in the south, where there are a lot of pine trees).WARRANTYAbout a month after owning my pump, it began to make a funny louder humming noise when the pump first turned on, but would go away within seconds. About 4 months later, the noise worked its way up to 30-45 seconds. I called Intex about this afraid something was "breaking" internally, and they were super kind during the whole 5 minute phone call (yes, only 5 minutes!). They gave me a fax # to fax a copy of my receipt to along with a completed form they emailed to me. Within 24 hours of faxing that I received an email stating my new pump was being FedEx'd to me. No I didn't have to return the other pump, no additional phone calls, no more questions, and no money out of my pocket. I received the NEW (not refurbished, not an open-box...NEW) pump within 4 days of that email. I do hope this pump doesn't have the same problem, but with a warranty like this for 2 years, would it really matter? I suspect in 2 years they will have a better pump available and I will get rid of this one anyways.SUMMING IT ALL UP...I LOVE LOVE LOVE this pump. Yeah, they could work on the programming issues, but for the price and cleanliness of my pool...I can deal. My water is crystal clear, it doesn't taste too salty, no dangerous chemicals being used or laying around, I know there are no "critters" laying their eggs in it, and I spend less than an hour a week maintaining it! Go Intex!
